A first-generation college student, Leigh Ann Hoskins is well on her way to earning a bachelor’s degree in social work through the Gateway-to-NKU transfer program. During her time at Gateway, Leigh Ann has earned a Stewards of Children Certificate, made the Dean’s List every semester, and had the privilege of participating in service learning at the Life Learning Center. With her degree, Leigh Ann hopes to be an encouragement for those with a mental disability; to give them hope, and show them a brighter future is possible. Leigh Ann has been married for twenty-three wonderful years, and has a daughter, a son, and a grandson.
First, I would like to thank God for giving me the courage to obtain my dream. Thank you, Tim, and Grace (my husband and daughter) for being so supportive and encouraging me. Grace – thank you for proofreading my essays. I would like to thank the staff at Life Learning Center, but especially Fran and Lenette. Fran gave me the shove I needed to go to college, helped me choose Gateway, guided me through the enrollment process, and has written several scholarship letters of recommendation. Lenette for all the kind words of encouragement, proofreading scholarship essays, and writing letters of recommendation. Thank you, Dr. Stewart, for pushing me to earn my bachelor’s degree. You have gently guided me to make wise decisions. Last, but not least, the instructors and staff at Gateway, who – with helpful patience – have answered all my questions. A special thanks to Charles Warburton… without your patience and love for your students, I never would have made it through Math 146 and Statistics. I have saved the most important one for last; I am forever grateful to be chosen as an Outstanding Woman. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected. By awarding me this scholarship, I will be one step closer to achieving my dream.
